A workplace dispute tragically escalated, leading to the death of 25-year-old Daniel Leroy Brotemarkle, a male resident of Pontiac, Michigan. On June 27, 2022, Brotemarkle was fatally shot multiple times outside his home on Woodland Drive. The events leading to his death began with a verbal and physical altercation with his 27-year-old supervisor, Nathanial Marceal Ebarra, reportedly over Brotemarkle being late for work.
Following the initial confrontation at their place of employment, a
dock installation company, both men were sent home for the day. Brotemarkle drove home in a company vehicle, with the permission of the business owner. Shortly after, Ebarra, along with other co-workers, arrived at Brotemarkle's residence to retrieve the company truck. It was then that a second confrontation occurred, which culminated in the fatal shooting.
Law enforcement arrived to find Brotemarkle unresponsive in the road with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators recovered several 9mm shell casings at the scene. Within an hour of the incident, Nathanial Marceal Ebarra was arrested at his own residence in Pontiac by Sheriff's deputies and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Ebarra was initially charged with carrying a concealed weapon. After further investigation and forensic review, a charge of second-degree murder was added. He was held at the Oakland County Jail without bond, and a preliminary examination was scheduled for September 8, 2022.
