On a winter day in Detroit, Michigan, the life of 32-year-old Black soul singer Darrell Eubanks Banks was brought to an abrupt and violent end. On February 24, 1970, Banks was fatally shot by an off-duty police officer named Aaron Bullock. The tragic event unfolded as a personal dispute escalated into a fatal confrontation. Banks had gone to the home of his girlfriend, Marjorie Bozeman, with whom his relationship was reportedly ending.
When Banks arrived, he found Bozeman in the company of Bullock. An altercation ensued when Banks insisted on speaking with Bozeman. According to reports, Banks grabbed Bozeman's arm, prompting Bullock to identify himself as a police officer and demand that Banks release her. It is reported that Banks then drew a pistol and aimed it at Bullock. In response, Bullock drew his own weapon and fired, striking Banks. The singer was rushed to New Grace Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Following the shooting, the incident was investigated, but the off-duty officer, Aaron Bullock, was not charged with a crime. The shooting was deemed justifiable at the time because it was reported that Banks had drawn his weapon first. Consequently, there were no arrests or a trial for the death of Darrell Banks, and Bullock continued his career in law enforcement without legal repercussions. The soul music community mourned the loss of the talented singer, known for his hit 'Open the Door to Your Heart.' In the years following his death, fans from around the world raised money to place a memorial bench at his previously unmarked grave.
