On the evening of February 26, 2014, Courtney M. Meeks, a 24-year-old Black male, was working his shift as a security guard at a CVS pharmacy on Schaefer Highway in Detroit, Michigan. His life was cut tragically short when he heroically intervened in a violent crime unfolding in the store's parking lot.
Three armed individuals, later identified as Jeremy Vincell Jackson, Ronnie Alsonzo Anderson-Williams, and Jamare Lanell Rucker, were in the process of carjacking a woman.
Just moments before, they had unsuccessfully attempted to steal another vehicle nearby but were thwarted by a push-button ignition they couldn't operate. Undeterred, they moved on to the CVS parking lot and targeted another vehicle.
A woman emerging from the store witnessed the terrifying scene and rushed back inside, screaming for help. Without hesitation, Meeks, dressed in his security uniform, ran out to confront the assailants and protect the female victims. During the ensuing altercation, a single shot was fired, striking Meeks in the neck. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his wound.
The suspects fled the scene in the stolen vehicle. However, a tip to Crime Stoppers led to their eventual apprehension. The investigation resulted in serious charges against all three men. Jeremy Vincell Jackson was charged with felony murder, armed robbery, carjacking, and felony firearm possession. Ronnie Alsonzo Anderson-Williams faced charges of armed robbery, carjacking, and felony firearm possession. Jamare Lanell Rucker was charged with felony murder, armed robbery, carjacking, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and felony firearm possession. Following their arrests, a judge ordered the three men to stand trial for their roles in the death of Courtney Meeks.
