J'Quan Jones, a 21-year-old male, was tragically shot and killed in Detroit, Michigan on July 6, 2021, his 21st birthday. A former star athlete and a 2018 graduate of Madison High School, Jones was driving his mother's car on the city's east side in the area of 8 Mile and Rex when the incident occurred.
In the early morning hours, around 1:50 a.m., an unknown assailant fired into the vehicle.
Jones was fatally wounded, and a friend who was with him in the car was also injured in the shooting. The motive for what has been described as a random shooting is not publicly known.
Family and friends gathered to honor his life at Balduck Park in Detroit, a place that held sad significance for the family. Two years prior, they had gathered at the same park to mourn the loss of Jones's first cousin, Teao Garrett, who was also a victim of gun violence. The cousins were born just a month apart and were raised like brothers. Jones was present the night his cousin was killed and was deeply affected by the traumatic event.
At the time of the news reports, the police had limited information to proceed with the investigation. They believed the suspect may have been driving a White Durango and urged anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers. No arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the murder of J'Quan Jones.
