On a summer evening in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a dispute between two neighborhood groups erupted in gunfire, tragically cutting short the life of an innocent bystander. Orlando Walker, a 30-year-old male, was caught in the crossfire on July 6, 2014, on Kalamazoo's Northside. He was shot in the chest and succumbed to his injuries. Another man was shot in the leg during the same incident but survived.
Walker was a father to three children and a beloved son who was remembered at a funeral service at The Galilee Baptist Church.
The investigation into Walker's death revealed a violent altercation between two feuding groups known as the 'Church Street People' and the 'Woodbury Street People.' In the course of the investigation, authorities made several arrests. One individual, Kenneth Langston, was initially charged with Walker's murder. However, as more witnesses came forward, the charges against Langston were later adjusted to felony firearms charges.
Another man, Dante Johnson, was also implicated in the shooting. Johnson was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. During legal proceedings, testimony revealed that Johnson had taken a gun from Langston and fired multiple shots in the direction where Walker was fatally wounded. Following a trial, Dante Johnson was convicted on the firearm charges. He was subsequently sentenced to serve 10 to 25 years in prison for the felon-in-possession conviction, with an additional consecutive two-year term for the felony-firearm conviction.
