In the afternoon hours of November 4, 2023, the life of 35-year-old Kemberlyn Dwayne Trotman, Sr., a Black male, was tragically cut short in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The incident unfolded around 12:30 p.m. on Woodbury Avenue, where authorities responded to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Trotman with a fatal gunshot wound to his head.
He was immediately transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be insurmountable, and he succumbed to them.
Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic and violent scene, stating that a man was seen wielding two firearms and discharging them at a group of people and nearby homes. This individual was quickly identified as 36-year-old Laquay Lee Woodford-Paige. He was apprehended by law enforcement shortly after the shooting.
Following his arrest, Woodford-Paige faced a series of serious charges, initially for discharging a firearm into a dwelling causing death. These charges were later elevated to include open murder and several other firearm-related offenses, reflecting the gravity of his alleged actions. The legal process moved forward, and in August 2024, a jury found Laquay Lee Woodford-Paige guilty of second-degree murder, along with multiple firearm charges.
The culmination of the legal proceedings came in October 2024, when Woodford-Paige was sentenced for his crimes. He received a prison sentence of 28 to 60 years for the second-degree murder conviction. In addition to this, he was handed further sentences for the related firearm offenses, ensuring he would be incarcerated for several decades.
