A sense of homecoming turned to tragedy for Courtney Willis, a 26-year-old man who had returned to the Muskegon area for the holidays from his residence in Kentucky. The evening of February 1, 2017, brought a violent end to his visit. In Muskegon Heights, within the 3200 block of Eighth Street, Willis was discovered by a family member in the breezeway of a home around 9 p.m. He had been shot nine times.
Investigators found shell casings both inside and outside the residence, suggesting a brutal and emotionally charged attack. The nature of the crime, described by police as 'overkill,' led them to believe the motive could have been deeply personal, possibly stemming from a sense of betrayal. Despite the violent nature of the crime and the clues left at the scene, the investigation has faced significant challenges.
To date, the murder of Courtney Willis remains unsolved. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with his death.
