On June 15, 2020, 17-year-old Aquae Keyes, a Black male, was fatally shot on the second floor of the Clarion Inn on Seaway Drive in Muskegon Heights, Michigan. A woman at the hotel called 911 to report the sound of gunshots, leading police to discover Keyes, who had been shot multiple times in the face and chest.
The investigation swiftly led to the arrest of another 17-year-old, Jakari Robertson. Robertson was arraigned on charges of open murder and felony firearm in connection with Keyes' death. The case drew significant attention due to the young ages of both the victim and the alleged perpetrator, highlighting the tragic impact of youth gun violence on the community.
Following his arrest, Robertson was released on a $250,000 bond. In a tragic turn of events, on August 3, 2020, Robertson himself was shot and killed. This second shooting also resulted in serious injuries to his 14-year-old brother. Due to Robertson's death, the open murder charge against him in the death of Aquae Keyes was dismissed.
The violence did not end there. In connection with Robertson's murder, Aquae's brother, Antwan Keyes III, and another individual, Christopher Mychael Bosworth, were implicated. Antwan Keyes later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for his role in the shooting of Robertson and his brother. Bosworth was also convicted of first-degree murder in relation to Robertson's death.
