On a cold December afternoon in Muskegon, Michigan, the life of 24-year-old Jamarr Tyrece Burse was tragically cut short. On December 29, 2022, police found Burse shot to death inside a vehicle at the intersection of Columbia Avenue and Continental Street in the nearby city of Norton Shores. The incident, which occurred around 1:30 p.m., also left a 16-year-old passenger in the car with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
The teen managed to flee to a nearby home for help and was subsequently hospitalized and later released.
Jamarr, a graduate of Muskegon Covenant Academy, was remembered by his family as a warm and affectionate man who was the 'best hugger' and loved soul food and family gatherings. He worked as a machine operator for a company called Challenge. His family, deeply affected by the senseless act of violence, called for justice and urged anyone with information to come forward to assist the police in their investigation. His older sister, Ieshia Burse, later shared that after their parents passed away, she had taken on a parental role for her younger brother, describing him as her protector, confidant, and best friend.
The investigation into the targeted shooting led authorities to 23-year-old Amir Sincere Petty of Muskegon. Petty was already in custody at the Muskegon County Jail on unrelated weapons charges from July 2023 when he was charged with open murder, felon in possession of a firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon in connection with Burse's death. His bond was set at $1 million.
Following a four-day trial in October 2025, a jury found Amir Petty guilty of first-degree premeditated murder, as well as four weapons-related charges. During the sentencing hearing, Jamarr's sister gave an emotional statement, speaking of the profound loss her family endured. On November 20, 2025, Amir Petty, then 26, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Jamarr Burse. He also received additional sentences for the weapons convictions.
