In the summer of 2014, a wave of violence cast a dark shadow over Muskegon Heights, Michigan, and at the heart of this turmoil was the tragic death of 24-year-old Rayshun Day, a Black male resident of the city. On the morning of June 24th, while walking to his job, Day was fatally shot in the head near the intersection of Hume Avenue and Reynolds Street. His death was not an isolated incident but rather one of several homicides that shook the community during that period, leaving residents fearful and demanding answers.
The investigation into Rayshun Day's murder soon led authorities to a 19-year-old Muskegon man named Jalon Ladrick Merriweather. Evidence presented during the subsequent trial would reveal that the killing was rooted in gang-related activity. It was established that Rayshun Day was a known member of the Gangster Disciples. The prosecution built a case against Merriweather, and the trial began on December 8, 2015. After days of testimony and presentation of evidence, the jury delivered its verdict on December 11, 2015.
Jalon Ladrick Merriweather was found guilty on all counts. The charges included first-degree premeditated murder, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony, and a gang-related felony. Following his conviction, on January 19, 2016, Merriweather was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Rayshun Day. He also received sentences for the other charges, including a term of 7 years and 11 months to 20 years for the gang-related felony. An appeal of his conviction was later denied. Jalon Merriweather is currently serving his life sentence at the Gus Harrison Correctional Facility.
