In the summer of 2022, the life of 28-year-old Miguel Angel Gutierrez of Muskegon, Michigan, was tragically cut short. On Sunday, June 12, Gutierrez was fatally shot in the backyard of a residence in Rothbury, a small community in Grant Township. The incident unfolded around noon at the home of Crystal Ramona Gonzalez. Gutierrez sustained seven gunshot wounds, which a forensic pathologist later determined to be the cause of his death, ruling it a homicide.
According to Gonzalez's testimony, Gutierrez had been staying at her home for three nights leading up to the shooting.
Immediately following the shooting, the perpetrator fled the scene, heading south on US 31 in a white pickup truck. Law enforcement swiftly apprehended the suspect in Muskegon County. The man taken into custody was 33-year-old Carlos Andres Sanchez, also from Muskegon. While a definitive motive was not required to be proven in court, testimony suggested a potential connection to a dispute involving the mother of Gutierrez's child.
Carlos Andres Sanchez was charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm. His trial commenced on September 18, 2023, and after about three hours of deliberation, a jury found him guilty on September 21. During the trial, several witnesses, including Gonzalez and first responders, provided testimony. An emotional moment in the proceedings occurred when a letter from Miguel Gutierrez's mother was read, in which she described her son as a loving and helpful young man who had been turning his life around after a troubled past and had found religion. On November 13, 2023, Sanchez was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the first-degree murder conviction, with an additional consecutive two-year term for the felony firearm conviction.
