In a tragic sequence of events that unfolded in a Grand Rapids parking lot, 17-year-old James King, a senior at East Kentwood High School, lost his life. The young man was shot and killed on January 13, 2019, during what was orchestrated to be a robbery disguised as a marijuana deal. The incident took place in the parking lot of the Towne and Country Shopping Center, located at Kalamazoo Avenue and 44th Street SE.
King had arranged to sell marijuana to a group of his classmates, a transaction that had been set up over social media with the intent to rob him of the drugs.
Five individuals arrived in a car to meet King: Ahmed Hasan, Kayleb Sims, Alanah Claflin, Israel Valdez, and Sebastian Quinones. King and his cousin had walked to the shopping center to meet them. After King got into the backseat of the vehicle, the situation quickly escalated. When Valdez attempted to steal the marijuana from King, a physical struggle broke out. During the altercation, Valdez shot King in the face. After the shooting, King was pushed out of the car, and the five suspects fled the scene, leaving him in the arms of his cousin.
The aftermath of the shooting saw all five individuals arrested and facing charges for their roles in the death of James King. Rather than proceeding to trial, all five entered into plea deals. Israel Valdez, identified as the shooter, was sentenced to 23 to 50 years in prison for second-degree murder, with an additional two years for a felony firearm charge. Sebastian Quinones received a sentence of 15 to 40 years for armed robbery, while Alanah Claflin was sentenced to 10 to 40 years on the same charge. Kayleb Sims and Ahmed Hasan were both sentenced to five years of probation and one year in the Kent County Jail, with credit for time already served. During the sentencing, members of King's family expressed their profound grief and anger, confronting the defendants with the irreversible consequences of their actions. With the exception of one, the defendants apologized to King's family for their involvement in the robbery and murder.
