In the early morning hours of Friday, January 14, 2022, the life of 56-year-old Richard Lewis Spence Jr. was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. Officers from the West Precinct were dispatched to the 1100 block of 24th Street North on a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, they found Spence, a Black male, lying unresponsive in the roadway, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.
The initial investigation by the Birmingham Police Department suggested that the shooting was preceded by an argument. Detectives worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter. Their efforts soon focused on a suspect, and an arrest was made in connection with the homicide.
The individual taken into custody was identified as Cortez Moore. Following questioning by detectives, Moore was charged with capital murder in the death of Richard Lewis Spence Jr. He was subsequently booked into the Jefferson County Jail, where he was held without bond. The case then moved to the judicial system for prosecution.
