On October 1, 2021, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Birmingham Police officers responded to a robbery alarm at the Chevron gas station located at 1800 31st Street Southwest in Birmingham, Alabama. Upon arrival, they discovered 29-year-old Richard Lee Samuels lying unresponsive in the parking lot, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived shortly thereafter and pronounced Samuels deceased at the scene.
