In the early morning hours of July 23, 2025, a violent encounter in the Ensley neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama, claimed the life of 32-year-old Devin Wayne Hughes, a White male. Hughes was driving his car with two passengers when an individual opened fire on the vehicle. Despite being wounded, Hughes attempted to drive away from the scene but ultimately crashed his sedan into a tree in the 4100 block of Avenue L.
His two passengers, who were unharmed, exited the wrecked vehicle and
managed to flag down a police officer for help. When authorities arrived at the crash site, they discovered Hughes inside the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene from the gunshot wound. The initial investigation suggested that the shooting had occurred at a location nearby, and that Hughes was trying to flee when the crash happened.
In the days following the shooting, Birmingham police took multiple individuals into custody for questioning. This led to a significant development in the case with the arrest of a suspect, identified as Cameron Jackson. Jackson was subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with the death of Devin Wayne Hughes. He is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly released.
