In the late summer of 2024, the life of Jamarcus Desean McIntyre, a 32-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. On Sunday, September 22, McIntyre was fatally shot as he was leaving a residence on 81st Place South. The perpetrators had apparently been lying in wait for him. During the attack, a backpack belonging to McIntyre was also stolen.
His death marked the city's 114th homicide investigation of the year.
The investigation into McIntyre's murder led to the swift identification of several suspects. Within days, Birmingham Police detectives secured warrants for the arrest of four individuals: 29-year-old Dmarco Beck, 22-year-old Ny'Quan Lollar, 22-year-old Damien McDaniel, and 31-year-old Larry Rollins Jr. All four were charged with capital murder in the commission of a robbery. A fifth suspect, 22-year-old Zachary Alexander Holmes, was later apprehended and also charged with capital murder. All the accused were taken into custody and held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
The legal proceedings following the arrests have begun to unfold. Larry Rollins Jr. entered a plea of not guilty to the capital murder charge. His case is further complicated by a separate federal indictment for his alleged involvement in a significant drug trafficking conspiracy. Damien McDaniel, who is implicated in a number of other violent crimes in the Birmingham area, including another mass shooting, also pleaded not guilty to the charges related to McIntyre's death. The prosecution has indicated its intent to seek the death penalty for the eligible defendants in this case. As the judicial process continues, the trial dates for the five men charged with the murder of Jamarcus Desean McIntyre have not yet been set.
