On February 6, 1922, Deputy Sheriff Robert "Bob" Smith of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office in Alabama was fatally shot while attempting to serve an arrest warrant on a murder suspect. Accompanied by another deputy, Smith confronted the suspect, who opened fire, resulting in Smith's death. In response, the accompanying deputy shot and killed the assailant.
