According to relatives, the victims had just returned home after an all-night family gathering in Lynwood when they were confronted by individuals from their neighborhood who appeared to pick a fight without any apparent reason. David Parra's wife, Crystal Chavez, described the events leading to the shooting, stating that her husband had attempted to deter the attackers by firing his firearm at the floor, but the attackers returned with firearms and began shooting. Antonio Munoz Chavez was killed instantly, while David Parra died at Franciscan Hospital in Olympia Fields.
The police investigation led to the arrest and charging of three individuals in connection with the shooting. Alexis Mendoza, 19, and Adrian Romo-Trejo, 24, were each charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Jesus Mendoza, 43, was charged with one count of aggravated battery. The three suspects appeared in bond court, where Alexis Mendoza and Adrian Romo-Trejo were ordered held without bond, and Jesus Mendoza was ordered held on a $100,000 bond.
