Tyjuan Willingham, a 19-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on July 1, 2016, in Ford Heights, a suburb of Chicago Heights, IL. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. in the driveway of a house located in the 1400 block of 14th Place. Tyjuan was with his cousin, Duboris Harden, and four other individuals when an argument broke out between Tyjuan and Duboris. During the altercation, Duboris, who was 22 years old at the time, pulled out a semi-automatic firearm and shot Tyjuan multiple times. Officers responding to a call of shots fired found Tyjuan on the ground with at least three gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to Franciscan St. James Health in Chicago Heights, where he was pronounced dead at 2:18 p.m. that same day.
The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled Tyjuan's death a homicide. Duboris Harden, who was on parole for a previous burglary conviction, fled the scene but was apprehended by sheriff's investigators less than a mile away from the location of the shooting. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of his cousin. Duboris appeared in court on July 5, 2016, where a judge ordered him held without bond. His next court date was scheduled for the following Wednesday.
