Tyrone Anthony, a 17-year-old African American male from Chicago Heights, IL, was tragically shot and killed on September 16, 2017. The incident occurred in an open lot at the southwest corner of 15th Street and Wallace Street in Chicago Heights. Officers responding to the scene found Tyrone with a gunshot wound to the chest at approximately 1:13 p.m. He was transported to St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, where he was pronounced dead at 1:57 p.m. An autopsy confirmed that Tyrone died from a gunshot wound to the chest, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation led to the arrest of two men from Chicago Heights. Sherman Martin, a 42-year-old male, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Tyrone's death. Martin, who has a history as a convicted sex offender, was denied bail during a court hearing. DuShawn Cook, a 46-year-old male, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Cook is accused of providing the gun used in the shooting to Martin. Cook's bail was set at $50,000.
The case revealed that earlier on the day of the shooting, a man had been escorted away from Martin's house but later returned to the area with Tyrone. Cook allegedly handed Martin the gun, which was then used in the fatal shooting. Police recovered multiple spent shell casings and a silver handgun from the scene. Both suspects were scheduled to appear in court on October 6, 2017, in Markham.
