In the early morning hours of Saturday, April 29, 2023, a dispute outside of a hotel in Kentwood, Michigan, turned fatal, ending the life of 41-year-old Edgar Hernandez-Sandoval. The male victim was a resident of Grand Rapids. An altercation occurred at the Affordable Suites of America on East Beltline Avenue SE.
The argument escalated, and Edgar Hernandez-Sandoval was shot once with a handgun. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Kentwood Police Department investigated the homicide and identified a suspect.
Jerry Kidd Jr., a 35-year-old man, was arrested in connection with the shooting. Kidd was charged with open murder and a felony firearms offense. He was arraigned on the following Monday in 62B District Court and held at the Kent County Correctional Facility to await further legal proceedings.
In January 2024, the case against Jerry Kidd Jr. went to trial. After hearing the evidence presented, a Kent County jury delivered a verdict of not guilty. The Kent County Prosecutor's Office confirmed the acquittal, and Kidd was cleared of the charges in the shooting death of Edgar Hernandez-Sandoval.
