On the evening of Friday, October 22, 2021, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, 30-year-old Demarcus Javon Brown was shot in the 200 block of Highland Street SE. The incident occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. near the intersection of Highland Street and Cass Avenue. Emergency services responded and transported Brown to a nearby hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
His death was officially ruled a homicide by the Grand Rapids Police Department.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement officials began an investigation into the shooting, asking for the public's assistance in identifying any suspects or gathering information about the circumstances that led to the fatal event. For a time, no suspect information was publicly released, and the case remained under active investigation by Grand Rapids Police Department detectives.
Over a year later, a significant development occurred in the case. On December 19, 2022, Cordney Dashawn Toliver, also 30 years old, pleaded no contest to a six-count warrant that included a charge of open murder for the death of Demarcus Javon Brown. At the time the charges were brought against him in November 2021, Toliver was already incarcerated at the Kent County Correctional Facility on unrelated charges, which included home invasion and assault. Following his plea in the 17th Circuit Court, Toliver was scheduled for sentencing in January of the following year.
