On April 2, 2021, in the quiet suburb of Walker, just outside of Grand Rapids, Michigan, the life of 43-year-old Damone Hammock was tragically cut short. On that Friday evening, a dispute at a home on Cedar Run Court escalated into violence, ending with Hammock suffering a fatal gunshot wound.
Earlier in the day, Hammock and his wife had reportedly been arguing about their financial situation. Later, a physical altercation occurred involving Hammock and his stepdaughter's boyfriend.
The situation intensified when several other young people became involved. In the midst of the turmoil, 16-year-old Marshall Rylee Mansfield shot Hammock.
Police responded to reports of a fight and gunshots around 5 p.m. and found Damone Hammock deceased in the backyard of the residence. Several individuals were detained for questioning following the incident. The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Mansfield at the scene.
The Kent County Prosecutor's Office charged Mansfield as an adult with open murder and felony firearm. He initially pleaded not guilty. The legal proceedings that followed revealed more details about the chaotic moments leading up to the shooting. Ultimately, Mansfield accepted a plea deal from prosecutors. He was sentenced to a term of 71 months to 15 years in prison for the lesser charge of manslaughter, with an additional two years for the felony firearm conviction. The resolution of the case brought a measure of legal closure, but for the family and friends of Damone Hammock, it marked a devastating and permanent loss.
