In the early morning hours of September 21, 2019, the life of 29-year-old Markese Boyd, a male resident of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was tragically cut short. Grand Rapids Police were initially called to the 1000 block of Ionia Avenue SW following a report of a shooting. While officers were canvassing the area for a victim, they received notification that Boyd had arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his neck.
Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Family members of Boyd believe the fatal shooting may have been the culmination of an argument that occurred earlier in the evening. Boyd was remembered by his loved ones as a kind and gifted musician, known for playing the piano and drums at area churches. His uncle described his death as a 'senseless murder' and lamented the prevalence of gun violence in the community. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that Boyd's mother had also been killed at the age of 29, years prior.
The investigation into Markese Boyd's death has been hampered by a lack of cooperation from witnesses. Law enforcement officials have publicly stated that cooperation in this and other shootings that occurred the same weekend has been minimal. Community leaders have pleaded for an end to the 'code of silence' to help bring those responsible to justice. To date, no arrests have been announced in connection with the homicide of Markese Boyd. The Grand Rapids Police Department, along with organizations like Silent Observer, continue to appeal to the public for any information that may lead to the identification and apprehension of the person or persons responsible for his death.
