In the summer of 2020, the life of 23-year-old Quavon Shamar Lee was tragically cut short in Grand Rapids, Michigan. On the evening of June 7th, police were called to the 800 block of Bemis Street SE following reports of gunshots. Upon their arrival, they discovered a running vehicle with two occupants who were both deceased. Inside were Quavon Shamar Lee and 20-year-old Jaionna Michelle Braden; both had been fatally shot.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to a
suspect, Juan Nico Garcia, who was 30 years old at the time of his arrest. Garcia was taken into custody and subsequently faced multiple charges in connection with the deaths of Lee and Braden. The charges against him included two counts of open murder, assault with intent to murder, felony firearm, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Following his arrest, Juan Nico Garcia was incarcerated at the Kent County Correctional Facility. The legal proceedings culminated in June 2022 when Garcia was found guilty of the murders. For his role in the deaths of Quavon Shamar Lee and Jaionna Michelle Braden, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In addition to the life sentence, Garcia also received sentences of 25 to 50 years for the assault with intent to murder charge and 3 to 21 years for being a felon in possession of a firearm, ensuring that justice was served for the two young lives that were lost.
