In the spring of 2019, the life of 21-year-old Alunte Davis was tragically cut short in a violent act that also claimed the lives of two of his friends. On May 25th, inside a home on Detroit's east side, Davis, along with Timothy Blancher, 20, and Paris Cameron, 20, were shot and killed. Davis and Blancher were identified as gay men, and Cameron was a transgender woman.
The shooting, which occurred in the living room after a party attended by about 15 people, also left two other individuals wounded but alive. The brutality of the attack was stark, with one survivor testifying that so many bullets were fired that the victims' blood seeped through the walls.
The investigation into the triple homicide quickly pointed to 18-year-old Devon Robinson, also of Detroit. Authorities arrested Robinson, and the subsequent investigation led prosecutors to believe that the victims were targeted because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. This motive added a layer of poignancy to the crime, which occurred during Pride Month. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged Robinson with three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, and five counts of the use of a firearm in connection with a felony.
The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of justice for the victims and their families. Friends and community members remembered Alunte Davis as 'silly' and 'full of life.' He was known for being supportive of his friend Paris Cameron and her transition, and the two were often seen together. In March 2020, a Wayne County jury convicted Devon Robinson on all charges, including first-degree premeditated murder. The conviction carried the possibility of a life sentence in prison without the chance of parole, holding him accountable for the devastating loss of three young lives.
