On the morning of June 9, 2013, a violent incident unfolded on the west side of Detroit, Michigan, claiming the life of 25-year-old Prentice Smith Jr., a Black male also known to friends and family as "EJ." At approximately 11:00 a.m., Smith was seated in the driver's seat of his burgundy and tan Chevrolet Tahoe near the intersection of Grandville and Davison streets, in the vicinity of Schoolcraft and Evergreen Roads.
According to reports from the scene, shots rang out, striking Smith fatally while he was still inside his vehicle. A second individual, identified as a 22-year-old male who was also present during the shooting, sustained gunshot wounds but survived the encounter. This second victim managed to flee the immediate scene, running to a nearby relative's home to contact emergency services and report the crime.
Police arrived to find Smith unresponsive in his vehicle. Despite the daylight hour and the presence of another victim, information regarding the perpetrators remained scarce in the immediate aftermath.
