Willie Mills, a 31-year-old Black male, was killed in the early hours of New Year's Day 2021 in Detroit, Michigan. The incident, which marked the city's first homicide of the year, took place at a residence on Griggs Street that he shared with his girlfriend, Kiantay Lovett-McCall.
Reports indicate that an argument between Mills and Lovett-McCall escalated, leading to the fatal shooting. Lovett-McCall is alleged to have retrieved a firearm and shot Mills multiple times.
When police arrived at the home, they discovered Mills on the floor with several gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medical responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, Kiantay Lovett-McCall, who was 24 years old at the time, was taken into custody by police who found her outside the house when they arrived. She was subsequently arrested and faced charges of first-degree murder and felony firearm. A judge set her bond at $1 million.
