In the light of a Detroit day on October 2, 2016, Reuben Rambus, a 23-year-old African-American man, was fatally shot while inside his car. The brazen daylight killing highlighted the persistent issue of gun violence in the city. In the aftermath, those who gathered to mourn him at a candlelight vigil were themselves met with gunfire, resulting in injuries and compounding the tragedy for a grieving community.
To date, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Reuben Rambus. The case remains unsolved, leaving his family and friends without answers or justice for his death. His death serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence that continues to affect communities.
Following his brother's death, Romel Rambus established a group known as 'REUB Gang' in his honor. This group later became the focus of a major federal investigation into a multi-state drug trafficking operation. The investigation, dubbed 'Operation Letter to Reub,' centered on the trafficking of thousands of oxycodone and fentanyl pills from Detroit to North Dakota, specifically targeting Native American reservations.
This extensive investigation led to the indictment of over 40 individuals, including Romel Rambus, who was identified as taking over the drug trafficking operations after his brother's death. In February 2024, Romel Rambus was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for his leadership role in the drug conspiracy. Other key figures in the organization also received lengthy prison sentences. While this federal operation dismantled a significant criminal enterprise that grew in the wake of Reuben's death, it is separate from the investigation into his still-unsolved homicide.
