Kelvin Wheeler Jr., a 34-year-old man, was shot and killed in Detroit, Michigan on the night of July 8, 2020. Wheeler, a beloved youth pastor and the dean of students at Triumph Middle School in Harper Woods, had just left his father's house and was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Livernois Avenue and Ewald Circle around 11:40 p.m. His girlfriend was in the passenger seat of his white Jeep Cherokee at the time of the incident.
While waiting for the light to change, they
were observing fireworks being set off in the neighborhood. Suddenly, an unknown male suspect approached their vehicle on foot and fired several shots into the front windshield, striking Wheeler multiple times. His girlfriend, who was physically unharmed, initially did not distinguish the sound of the gunshots from the fireworks. The assailant then fled the scene in what police described as an older-model gray sedan.
In the years following the shooting, the case has remained unsolved, and no arrests have been made. The motive behind the killing is still unclear, with some who knew Wheeler speculating that it may have been a case of mistaken identity. His family and friends remember him as a devoted father to his eight-year-old son, a man of God, and a dedicated mentor to the youth in his community. He was pursuing a master's degree in counseling and was preparing for ordination at his church.
Wheeler's mother and other family members have continued to appeal to the public for information, hoping that someone will come forward with the missing piece to solve the puzzle of his death. Crime Stoppers has offered a cash reward for any information that leads to an arrest in the case, as the community continues to mourn the senseless loss of a man who was considered a beacon of light and a positive influence on many.
