In the fall of 2019, on the west side of Detroit, a heated argument tragically escalated, ending the life of 27-year-old Donovan Welch. On October 14th, a dispute erupted between Welch, a Black male, and another man on the 15800 block of Joy Road. The verbal confrontation quickly turned violent, leading to a fatal conclusion.
The man Welch was arguing with, identified as 28-year-old Jerome Nowden, drew a handgun during the altercation and shot Welch in the chest.
Emergency services were called, and Welch was rushed to a nearby hospital, but the single gunshot wound proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to his injuries. The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office later ruled his death a homicide.
In the days following the shooting, the Detroit Police Department moved swiftly in their investigation. Two days after the incident, on October 16, 2019, Jerome Nowden was apprehended by authorities. Nowden, who was already on probation for a prior offense, was subsequently charged with four felony counts in connection with Donovan Welch's death, the most serious of which was first-degree murder.
Nowden's criminal history revealed previous encounters with the law, including offenses for drug possession, resisting a police officer, and firearms possession. Due to the gravity of the charges he faced in Welch's murder, he was denied bond during his arraignment. If convicted of first-degree murder, he faced a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
