On March 11, 2016, John "Chip" Smith, aged 63, was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting on Detroit's west side. The incident occurred in the 2600 block of Hazelwood, between Linwood and Chicago Boulevard, where Smith and three others were seated on a porch.
