On May 29, 2020, a young man from Detroit, Michigan, named Demarius Clark, who was 21 years old, tragically lost his life in a violent encounter. The events leading to his death began with a Facebook post in which Clark was seeking a driver for a task, offering $400 for the service. This seemingly innocuous request for assistance unfortunately attracted the attention of individuals with criminal intent, setting in motion a devastating chain of events.
The plan to rob Clark was reportedly
devised by 19-year-old Dmario D. Towns and his girlfriend, Jaidah Miller. Miller responded to Clark's online post and arranged to meet with him. She entered his vehicle, and what was supposed to be a staged robbery took a fatal turn. Instead of simply robbing him, Towns shot Clark in the neck. As Clark was dying from his injuries, Towns instructed Miller to drive away from the scene. They eventually abandoned the car on Le Fever Avenue, near Eight Mile Road in Warren, Michigan, and fled on foot. Before leaving, Towns stole $2,200 in cash from Clark.
The subsequent investigation led to the arrests of both Towns and Miller. The case against Towns was built on strong evidence, which was further solidified by Miller's testimony against him. In exchange for her cooperation, Miller agreed to a plea deal, pleading guilty to a charge of unarmed robbery. Towns, on the other hand, faced a jury trial in Macomb County. This trial was notably the first in-person jury trial held in the county since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the proceedings, Towns attempted to represent himself and claimed that Miller was lying. However, after a deliberation of about an hour, the jury found him guilty. He was convicted of first-degree felony murder, armed robbery, and two counts of felony firearm. Following his conviction, Dmario D. Towns was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
