On a Sunday afternoon in southwest Detroit, 45-year-old David Gergel was driving his vehicle near the intersection of Dix and Woodmere. It was September 6, 2015, and he was on his way to collect a payment for a paint job he had completed. His path was blocked by a newer model, black four-door Cadillac that was stopped in the middle of the street. As Gergel maneuvered his vehicle around the stopped car, an occupant of the Cadillac opened fire.
A single bullet pierced the driver's seat of
Gergel's vehicle, striking him in the back. Despite the fatal wound, Gergel managed to drive himself a few blocks away to a local store, where the owner promptly called for emergency services. He was rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital, but tragically, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Authorities believe the senseless act of violence was the result of a road rage incident. Surveillance footage from the area captured images of the black Cadillac involved in the shooting. In the years following the incident, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of David Gergel. The case remains an open homicide investigation, with a cash reward offered for any information that leads to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for his death.
