Cornell Emuel Squires, a 42-year-old man, was in the backyard of his home on South Electric Street when his life was abruptly and violently cut short. The father of two was a cherished son and boyfriend who had a passion for weightlifting, working on rental properties, and cooking.
His love for foreign cars, video games, music, and fashion were well-known to those who loved him.
The events of that morning unfolded with a chilling swiftness. As Squires walked in his backyard around 8:51 a.m., an unknown individual exited a newer model dark gray Blazer. The suspect, clad in a blue hooded sweater, a black mask, blue gloves, and light gray pants, approached Squires from behind. Without warning, the assailant opened fire, shooting Squires before retrieving something from the ground and fleeing the scene in the same vehicle. The brazen and targeted nature of the attack left a community in shock and a family devastated. His mother tragically found him.
In the aftermath of the senseless violence, family and friends gathered to mourn the loss of a man described as a protector and the light of their lives. The pain of his absence is deeply felt by his children, who lost a devoted and wonderful father. While the investigation into his death continues, no arrests have been made in the case.
