In the spring of 2017, a young man’s life was cut short in a burst of violence that claimed two other lives. Twenty-three-year-old Darrian Jones was killed on March 18, 2017, in a triple homicide on Detroit's west side. The shooting also resulted in the deaths of 43-year-old Michelle Davis and 60-year-old Robert Pittman. In the aftermath of the deadly incident, a suspect was taken into custody and subsequently hospitalized.
A man was later arraigned on murder charges in connection with the triple homicide.
A few years later, another tragedy unfolded involving a young man from the same city. Nineteen-year-old Darius Jones Jr. of Detroit was reported missing on June 21, 2020. He was last seen alive near Westphalia at approximately 4 p.m. The search for the young man came to a grim end on June 26, 2020, when his body was discovered wrapped in a carpet inside an abandoned home on Elmdale Street. An intensive investigation by the Detroit Police Department revealed that Jones had been the victim of a robbery and a fatal shooting.
The investigation into Darius Jones Jr.'s death led to the arrest of a suspect, 17-year-old Jahim Weathersby. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office filed multiple charges against Weathersby, including felony murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and armed robbery causing serious injury. Court records indicated that at the time of the incident, Weathersby was already on an electric tether for a prior carjacking case. His legal troubles were compounded by his connection to another carjacking on July 11, 2020, which resulted in six additional felony charges against him. Despite having been granted a reduced bond and placed on GPS monitoring for the earlier offense, bond was denied in the murder case, and Weathersby remained in custody as the legal proceedings unfolded.
