In the late hours of a spring evening in Detroit, Michigan, a verbal dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 46-year-old Luzell Orlando Etheridge Jr. and left four others wounded. The incident unfolded around midnight on May 20, 2024, in the 17000 block of Ohio Street.
Officers who responded to the scene discovered Etheridge on the sidewalk in front of his home with a fatal gunshot wound to his chest. The four other victims, ranging in age from 31 to 56, were taken to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries by private means.
The investigation into the quintuple shooting led police to identify 47-year-old Charles Deandre Carter of Detroit as the suspected gunman. It is alleged that during the heated argument, Carter produced a handgun and fired multiple shots, fatally striking Etheridge and injuring the others.
Following his arrest, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged Carter with one count of second-degree murder, four counts of assault with intent to murder, and five counts of felony firearm. He was arraigned on May 22, 2024, and remanded to jail. A probable cause conference was scheduled for May 29, with a preliminary examination set for June 4, 2024.
