In the winter of 2024, the life of 28-year-old Jermaine Fairley, a Black/African American man and father of five from Detroit, Michigan, was tragically cut short. On January 27th, Fairley attended a funeral and repast for a friend. Following the service, an altercation broke out, during which Fairley was shot in the back of the head. Instead of rendering aid or contacting authorities, those present allegedly placed him in his own vehicle and drove away from the scene.
The chain of events that followed shrouded his fate in mystery for nearly a week.
Fairley’s family grew increasingly desperate as days turned into a week with no word of his whereabouts. Their fears were compounded when his vehicle was discovered engulfed in flames, with no sign of him inside. The family's public pleas for information and an anonymous tip eventually led investigators to a grim discovery on February 2nd. Jermaine Fairley's body was found in a sewer on the city's west side, near Tyler Avenue and Sussex Street. Alongside his body, a gun was also recovered by the authorities.
The discovery of Fairley's body launched a homicide investigation by the Detroit Police Department. While they have identified two persons of interest in connection with the case, their identities have not been publicly released, and no arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events that led to Fairley's death.
