On January 27, 2024, 28-year-old Detroit resident and father of five, Jermaine Fairley, attended a friend's funeral and repast. After the services, he gathered with acquaintances near his home on Wildemere Street and Puritan Avenue. An argument ensued, during which Fairley was shot in the back of the head. Instead of seeking medical assistance, those present placed him in his own vehicle and fled the scene.
