In the summer of 2025, a wave of violence involving young people swept through Detroit, leaving families and communities in a state of grief and fear. Among the victims was 13-year-old Stephan Nolen Jr., a boy remembered by his family as a loving child who enjoyed playing games and shared a close bond with his sister. On the evening of August 1st, Stephan was walking with his 13-year-old stepbrother and another friend on the city's east side, near the intersection of East Lantz and Mitchell
streets. It was a walk that would tragically be his last.
As the teenagers made their way down the street, a dark-colored vehicle pulled up beside them. A brief exchange of words followed, the nature of which remains a harrowing unknown. Suddenly, the verbal confrontation escalated to gunfire. Shots rang out from the vehicle, striking both Stephan and his stepbrother. While his stepbrother was wounded, he was expected to recover. Stephan, however, did not survive his injuries. His family was left devastated, robbed of a future they had eagerly anticipated for their son, a child they insisted was not involved in any trouble.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Detroit Police Department launched an investigation, appealing to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for Stephan's death. A reward was offered for tips that could help solve the case. Community leaders and activists, weary of the escalating violence that had claimed the lives of multiple children in the city, voiced their outrage and demanded action. Vigils were held, and calls for justice for Stephan echoed through the neighborhood where he lost his life. Despite the ongoing investigation and the community's pleas, no arrests have been announced, and the individuals in the dark-colored vehicle remain at large, leaving a family to mourn and a city to grapple with the senseless loss of a young life.
