In the early hours of a summer morning in Detroit, Michigan, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace on Chandler Park Drive, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. On July 22, 2023, at approximately 2:02 a.m., 26-year-old Thomas Davis was enjoying his time outside a residence when a vehicle reportedly carrying three individuals approached. It is alleged that a dispute escalated into a violent confrontation, leading the occupants of the vehicle to open fire.
Davis was struck by multiple gunshots.
Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene where they found Thomas Davis grievously wounded. He was rushed to a local hospital, but despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The hail of bullets also struck two other individuals, a 26-year-old man and an 18-year-old man, who both survived the violent encounter. The suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
The investigation into the death of Thomas Davis moved swiftly, with the Detroit Police Department identifying and apprehending three suspects within days of the incident. On July 24, 2023, Alexis Childs, 25, was taken into custody. Two days later, on July 26, police arrested Elisha Dejuan Hill, 26, and a 15-year-old male in connection with the fatal shooting.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office subsequently brought serious charges against the three suspects. Childs, Hill, and the juvenile were each charged with one count of first-degree murder for the death of Thomas Davis. In addition, they faced two counts of assault with intent to murder for the non-fatal shootings of the other two victims, and three counts of felony firearm. The juvenile was to be charged as an adult-designated defendant, allowing for the possibility of an adult sentence upon conviction. Following their arraignment, Childs and Hill were remanded to jail to await their court dates, which were scheduled to begin in August 2023.
