In the quiet, pre-dawn hours of July 8, 2025, violence shattered the calm on Detroit's east side. Just after 3:30 a.m., near the intersection of East Outer Drive and Van Dyke, 23-year-old Michael Davis, a Black male, was approached by three men dressed entirely in black. The encounter was brief and brutal, as the three men opened fire, striking Michael multiple times at the entrance of an apartment building in the 4600 block. Medics who arrived at the scene pronounced him dead. The assailants made a quick escape, fleeing in a newer, dark gray Chevrolet SUV with dark rims, leaving behind a neighborhood stunned by the sudden and targeted attack.
In the wake of the shooting, the Detroit Police Department launched an intensive investigation. They circulated photos of Michael Davis and the suspected vehicle, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the perpetrators. A $5,000 reward was offered as detectives worked to gather leads and understand the motive behind the killing. The community was urged to come forward with tips, as the seemingly calculated nature of the crime, carried out under the cover of darkness with a swift getaway, presented a significant challenge to law enforcement. The focus of the investigation was to bring those responsible for Michael's death to justice.
By the end of July and the beginning of August, the investigation yielded significant results with the arrests of two suspects. On July 30, police apprehended 21-year-old Javon Timarious Hawk. This was followed by the arrest of 23-year-old Joseph Lavar Houston on August 4. A startling revelation emerged as the case progressed: both of the accused were cousins of Michael Davis. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office brought serious charges against the two men. Both Hawk and Houston were charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm. Houston also faced charges of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and a second felony firearm count. As the legal process began with their initial court hearings scheduled for mid-August, both men were remanded to jail.
