On August 5, 2011, Martell Tolbert, aged 21, was fatally shot in Detroit, Michigan. His death occurred on Cedargrove Street, where he was discovered as a victim of gun violence during an incident that remains part of Detroit's broader struggle with a high homicide rate. Martell's funeral service was held on August 13, 2011, at Fountain Tabernacle in Detroit, followed by his burial at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.
