In the midst of a Monday afternoon on Detroit's east side, a burst of gunfire shattered the neighborhood's calm, tragically ending the life of 20-year-old Tavontae Mathis-Jones. The shooting, which occurred on October 14, 2024, on Haverhill Street, also left three other individuals wounded. Mathis-Jones was rushed to St. John Ascension Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.
Among the other victims were another 20-year-old man who was left in critical condition, a 19-year-old man, and a 44-year-old woman who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Family and friends remember Mathis-Jones as a 'gentle giant' with a big heart. A recent graduate of Denby High School where he played football, he was described as ambitious, helpful, and deeply devoted to his 6-month-old daughter. His father, Cornelius Brown, shared that he had raised Tavontae since he was three years old and considered him one of his best friends. His family believes he was attempting to be a peacemaker during an altercation that escalated into the deadly shooting. They have been left devastated by the loss of a young man they say was doing all the right things in life.
As of the latest reports, the Detroit Police Department is actively investigating the shooting and is still searching for the person or persons responsible. No arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. Authorities have been canvassing the neighborhood, going door-to-door to interview residents and gather any information that might lead to a suspect. The family, while grappling with their immense grief, has pleaded for justice and for anyone with information to come forward. Police are urging the public to contact them or to submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
