In the early morning hours of December 7, 2021, a horrific act of violence shattered the peace of a neighborhood on Frederick Street near East Grand Boulevard in Detroit. Inside their home, 89-year-old William Whitley and his 62-year-old son, Natalino Whitley, were the victims of a brutal and calculated attack. The quiet of the morning was broken by the eruption of a fire, a blaze intentionally set to engulf the residence.
Firefighters, upon their arrival, were met with a scene of utter devastation.
As they battled the flames, they made a grim discovery near the back of the house: the bodies of William and Natalino. It appeared the two men, both U.S. veterans, had been desperately trying to escape the inferno that was consuming their home. The investigation would later reveal a chilling sequence of events. An explosive device, possibly a Molotov cocktail, had been hurled into the house, sparking the intense fire. But the flames were not the cause of their deaths. 'He was a good man,' William's grandson, T.J., shared, encapsulating the family's bewilderment. 'That's what the whole family is trying to figure out what's going, like how did this happen.'
