On May 27, 2024, 16-year-old John Howard-Thompkins was fatally shot by his uncle, 33-year-old Kenneth Thompkins, during a tragic incident on Detroit's east side. Family members reported that Kenneth had been experiencing a severe mental health crisis in the days leading up to the event.
