On May 27, 2024, a tragic domestic incident occurred in Detroit, Michigan, resulting in the death of 16-year-old John Howard Thompkins, a Black male. The events unfolded in the afternoon on Memorial Day at a residence in the 11100 block of Beaconsfield Street on the city's east side. Detroit police officers were dispatched to the home around 4:05 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting.
Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement encountered a chaotic situation.
Two women were outside the home, screaming and informing the officers that someone inside had been shot in the head. Officers immediately entered the residence to address the threat and aid the victim. Inside, they confronted an armed male suspect who was reportedly experiencing a severe mental health crisis.
The armed suspect was identified as 35-year-old Kenneth Thompkins, the uncle of the teenage victim. Investigators determined that prior to the police arrival, Kenneth had fatally shot his nephew, John Howard Thompkins. When officers engaged the suspect inside the home, an exchange of gunfire ensued. The suspect was struck by police fire and pronounced dead at the scene.
John Howard Thompkins was found suffering from gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries. Another woman at the location was also reported to have been injured during the incident but survived. Because the primary suspect, Kenneth Thompkins, died during the confrontation with police, there were no arrests or subsequent criminal trials in connection with the homicide. Joint funeral services for both the victim and the deceased suspect were later held in late June 2024.
