In the late hours of a Sunday summer evening in Detroit, an argument in an alleyway took a tragic and fatal turn, forever altering the lives of two families. On August 13, 2023, 20-year-old Jamal Gibson and his friend, 21-year-old K'Von Thompson-Doze, were in an alley in the 5080 block of Fredro Street. An altercation broke out, which quickly escalated.
It is alleged that during the dispute, a man produced a handgun and opened fire on both Gibson and Thompson-Doze.
Following the shooting, Jamal Gibson was privately transported to a local hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds. For three days, he fought for his life, but his injuries proved to be too severe. On August 16, 2023, Jamal Gibson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The loss of the two young men sent ripples of grief through their community, leaving family and friends to mourn their sudden and violent deaths.
The Detroit Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the double homicide. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, 22-year-old Deshaun Darvon Currie, also of Detroit. On September 15, 2023, just over a month after the fatal shooting, Currie was arrested. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged him with two counts of felony murder, two counts of premeditated first-degree murder, one count of lying to the police during a violent crime investigation, and four counts of felony firearm.
Deshaun Darvon Currie was arraigned on September 18, 2023, and was remanded to jail. The legal process began to unfold, with a probable cause conference scheduled for early October 2023, to be followed by a preliminary examination. As the case proceeds through the justice system, the families of Jamal Gibson and K'Von Thompson-Doze await the outcome, hopeful that justice will be served for the loss of their loved ones.
