In the winter of 2012, the Detroit community was shaken by the loss of Dwyone Joiner, a 33-year-old African-American man who was a beloved English teacher at Cody High School. On January 18, 2012, Joiner was found deceased in his home on Sussex Street, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound.
