On August 24, 2012, police in Detroit, Michigan, investigated the fatal shooting of 34-year-old Black male Dorian Anderson. Authorities discovered Anderson at a residence located in the 17500 block of Stout Street. The investigation into the homicide quickly advanced, leading law enforcement to identify a suspect in connection with the killing.
Salathiel Rezar Brown was arrested and subsequently charged by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. The charges brought against him included first-degree murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Additionally, he faced two counts of felonious assault. Following the legal proceedings, the case went to trial where a jury deliberated on the evidence presented regarding the events of that August day.
The jury returned a verdict acquitting Brown of the felonious assault charges but finding him guilty of second-degree murder, a lesser included offense of the original first-degree murder charge. He was also convicted on the weapons charges: felon in possession of a firearm and felony firearm. The court handed down a significant sentence, ordering Brown to serve a term of 100 to 150 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections for the murder conviction. This sentence was to run concurrently with a term of roughly three to five years for the felon-in-possession charge, and consecutively with a mandatory two-year term for the felony-firearm conviction.
Following his conviction, Brown launched an appeal arguing that his due process rights were violated. His defense contended that the trial court failed to properly question jurors after it was revealed that one juror had a brief social interaction with an assistant prosecutor during the trial. The appellate court reviewed the claims, noting that the specific juror in question had been dismissed, and ultimately affirmed Brown’s convictions and sentences in September 2014. Brown remains incarcerated with a maximum discharge date extending well into the next century.
