In a heartbreaking incident in Detroit, Michigan, a five-year-old boy named Sturlin Minion Jr. lost his life on December 9, 2023, after finding a loaded handgun in his home. The young boy was playing and jumping on a bed with his four siblings, who were all unsupervised at the time. He discovered the unsecured firearm on a dresser, and in a tragic turn of events, shot himself in the face.
Emergency services were dispatched to the family's apartment on Greenfield Road in the afternoon.
Upon arrival, officers found Sturlin with a critical gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The other four children in the home, ranging in age from four to eight, were unharmed but witnessed the traumatic event and were subsequently placed in the care of Children's Protective Services.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Sturlin's parents, Halisa Lloydnette-Christine Brown, 25, and Sturlin Markese Minion Sr., 33, were arrested. They were both charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree child abuse, and firearm violations. Sturlin Minion Sr. faced an additional charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The father stated that the gun belonged to the mother and that he was working at the time of the incident.
The legal process that followed saw Halisa Lloydnette-Christine Brown plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter in July 2024. In August 2024, she was sentenced to six months in jail and three years of probation. Sturlin Markese Minion Sr. pleaded no contest to the charges against him and was scheduled to be sentenced in September 2024. The case drew strong condemnation from law enforcement and prosecutors, who highlighted the preventable nature of the tragedy and urged gun owners to safely store their firearms, especially in homes with children.
