The circumstances of his death led to the arrest and conviction of Harold Reed, a Black male who was 49 years old at the time of his sentencing. The incident began when the baby's mother, Shaniqua Betty, then 21, found herself in a distressing situation after a dispute with her boyfriend. She left her home with Isaiah, but without her purse or shoes, and ended up at a bus stop. It was there that she encountered Harold Reed.
According to police, Betty entrusted her young son to Reed while she went back to her house. What happened next resulted in the infant's death. Authorities later stated that Reed admitted to striking the child to stop him from crying. The baby's body was discovered in an abandoned house. An autopsy revealed that Isaiah had died from multiple blunt force injuries, and his death was ruled a homicide.
Harold Reed was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges. In 2002, a jury convicted him of felony murder, second-degree murder, and first-degree child abuse. During his sentencing, Reed maintained his innocence, claiming he was in the 'wrong place at the wrong time' and that he had tried to get help for the child. Despite his plea, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The baby's mother, Shaniqua Betty, pleaded no contest to a charge of child abuse and received a sentence of one year of probation and mandatory counseling as part of a plea agreement.
